Sensor Fusion / Algorithm Development for Mobile Platforms

Introduction

Mobile platform recently feature a large number of sensors like cameras, microphones, accelerometers etc. Each of these sensors has its strengths and weaknesses. For example is a gyroscope very good at accurately detrmining fast, temporal orientation changes, but has a bad long term stability. An accelerometer on the other hand can only track orientation in two axes, but provides very stable long-term measurements. If the data form both these sensors is combined, fast orientation data in all axes with high stability can be achieved.

If the strengths and weaknesses of several sensors are combined, we call that sensor fusion. With the growing number of sensors built into mobile devices, using sensor fusion, various accurate information about the user of the device and his environment can be determined.

Implementation

Sensor fusion is a field that, although it is very well researched, still is very challenging for mobile device manufacturers and software developmers. LP-Research has a solid backround in sensor fusion, from a scientific perspective as well as form the standpoint of a hardware / software manufacturer.
